Born December 12th 1935 in Chillington, Devon, the son of Professor C Fraser and Dr Joyce Brockington née Furze.

Married to Diana née Pink, with four children – Professor Daniel, Dr Alice, Dr Grace and Dr Samuel Brockington.

Leisure pursuits: family activities, bookbinding and desk-top publishing (Eyry Press),      French, Italian and German literature, choral singing.

Career

1961-1962  House Physician or House Surgeon posts at the Midland Nerve Hospital, Manchester Royal Infirmary (Professor Boyd) and Chester City Hospital.

1962-1969 Various posts (including a Wellcome Trust Fellowship) at University College Hospital, Ibadan and (later) the University of Ibadan, alternating with the Royal Postgraduate Medical School (Professor Goodwin).

1969-1972 training posts in psychiatry at the Maudsley Hospital.

1972-1975 research at the Institute of Psychiatry with Professor Kendell.

1975-1982 Senior Lecturer, University of Manchester.

1980-1981 Visiting Professorships at University of Chicago, and Washington University in St Louis.

1983- 2001 Professor of Psychiatry, University of Birmingham (emeritus September 2001).

2002-2003 Visiting Professorships at University of Nagoya and University of Kumamoto, Japan.

2013 Honorary service researcher, University of Manchester.

Clinical work

1975-80  Honorary Consultant with responsibility for 12 beds at the University Hospital of South Manchester, and overall responsibility for the Mother & Baby unit.

1982 Honorary Consultant with responsibility for a community based psychiatric service in Central Manchester.

1983-89  Honorary Consultant in Central (later South) Birmingham, providing a service for Sparkbrook electoral ward.

1985-2001  Developing Regional Service for pregnancy-related mental illness.

1992-2001   Honorary Consultant, Mother & Baby Unit at Queen Elizabeth Psychiatric Hospital (8 single rooms, plus one apartment).  This service received >500 new referrals per year, including obstetric liaison referrals from 7 maternity hospitals.  At the time it may have been the only service which included domiciliary assessment & home treatment, day care and conjoint admission.

1983-1992   Involvement in the design of the Queen Elizabeth Psychiatric Hospital, and the establishment of Chairs in Learning Disability, Community Psychiatry & Biological Psychiatry (at Birmingham University), Postgraduate Psychiatry (at Keele University) and Psychotherapy (at Warwick University).

1984   Member, Maternity Services Advisory Committee.

1986-1991   Elected member, Court of Electors, Royal College of Psychiatrists.

1994-1997   Chairman, General and Old Age Psychiatry Specialist Advisory Committee of JCHPT.
